What should I do when the fire alarm sounds?
Treat every alarm as real. Leave by the closest safe exit without using elevators. Move away from the building and do not re-enter until emergency personnel or authorized staff confirm it is safe.
Can I use a fire extinguisher?
Evacuation comes first. Only consider using an extinguisher if you have received Western Fire Safety training, the fire is small and contained, your exit is clear, and conditions are safe. If unsure, evacuate.
Why must exits stay clear and fire doors remain unobstructed?
Clear routes allow people to evacuate and responders to enter. Fire doors help contain smoke and fire. Keep escape routes and equipment accessible, and never wedge or prop fire doors open.
Are candles and open flames allowed?
Candles, incense, and open flames are prohibited for general use. Choose battery-operated LED candles instead. Ask Western Fire Safety about requirements for planned flame-related activities.
Is smoking or vaping allowed on campus?
Smoking, vaping, and tobacco use are not permitted on Western's main campus. This includes smoking or vaping cannabis.
The policy includes exemptions concerning Indigenous cultural and ceremonial practices, approved teaching or research, and nicotine replacement therapies. Review the policy for the applicable conditions.
How can I reduce cooking-related fire risks?
Stay with your cooking, keep combustible materials away from heat sources, and use only appliances permitted in the space. Follow posted rules and manufacturer instructions.
Turn the cooking appliance off before leaving the cooking area.
How can I reduce battery and charging fire risks?
Use the manufacturer-recommended battery and charger. Charge only where permitted, where you can monitor the device, and away from exits and combustible materials. Do not use swollen, leaking, or damaged batteries.
If a battery is smoking, sparking, rapidly heating, or making hissing or popping sounds, leave the area and call 911 from a safe location. Do not delay leaving to move or unplug it.
What should I do if I see a fire safety concern?
Contact Western Fire Safety about non-emergency concerns such as blocked exits, damaged equipment, unsafe charging, or unsafe flame use. Include the building name or outdoor location and a brief description.
For fire, smoke, an active alarm, or an immediate threat to life or safety, leave the area and call 911 from a safe location. Do not report an emergency by email.
