Contact Fire SafetyDuring a Fire Drill
Treat every alarm as real, even if you expect a drill.
- Stop what you are doing if it is safe to do so and leave the building immediately using the closest safe exit.
- Do not use elevators.
- Once outside, move away from the building and keep entrances, exits, sidewalks, roadways, and fire routes clear.
- Follow direction from emergency personnel, Building Emergency Team members, building supervisory staff, Western Fire Safety, or authorized staff.
- Do not re-enter the building until emergency personnel or authorized staff confirm it is safe.
Why Fire Drills Are Conducted
Fire drills help building occupants practise evacuation procedures before an emergency. They also help Western Fire Safety and building supervisory staff identify whether procedures are understood and followed.
Drills help occupants practise leaving safely, moving to a safe location outside, and keeping access routes clear for emergency responders.
Scheduling and Questions
Western Fire Safety works with building supervisory staff to schedule campus fire drills and help ensure evacuation procedures are in place and understood.
Schedules may vary by building and operational needs. Contact Fire Safety with questions about a drill, evacuation procedures, or building-specific expectations.
Contact Fire SafetyWhat Fire Safety Reviews
During or after a drill, Western Fire Safety may review:

- Whether occupants use safe exit routes.
- Whether elevators are avoided during the alarm.
- Whether entrances, exits, sidewalks, roadways, and fire routes remain clear.
- Whether Building Emergency Team members and building supervisory staff understand their roles.
- Any issues requiring follow-up with building contacts.
