Planning an Open Burn Activity

Before the Activity

Submit open burn information before the planned activity so Western Fire Safety has time to review the request, ask follow-up questions, and identify any required approvals or precautions.

Submitting a request does not mean the activity has been approved. Do not begin an activity involving open flame or burning until the required review and approval have been completed.

When Review May Be Required

A request may be needed before an activity involving open flame, burning, or another similar fire-related hazard takes place on campus.

Examples may include teaching, research, ceremonial, operational, or event-related activities where open flame or burning is proposed.

Planning and Approval Considerations

Western Fire Safety may review the proposed location, timing, materials, supervision, fire protection measures, and safety precautions.

Additional review or follow-up may depend on the activity, location, weather conditions, building impacts, and other fire and life safety considerations.

Information to Include

Be prepared to provide information such as:

  • The proposed location.
  • The date, time, and expected duration.
  • The purpose of the activity.
  • Materials, fuel, or equipment involved.
  • Who will supervise the activity.
  • Fire protection measures and available safety equipment.
  • Any other relevant safety precautions or building impacts.

Western Fire Safety may request additional information depending on the activity and location.

Questions Before Submitting

For fire, smoke, an active alarm, or an immediate threat to life or safety, leave the area and call 911 from a safe location. Do not report an emergency through the request form.
