Keeping Fire and Life Safety Systems Ready

Why Inspection, Testing and Maintenance Matter

Fire and life safety systems are an important part of building safety. Required inspections, tests, and maintenance help identify deficiencies and confirm that systems remain ready to perform as intended.

These activities support emergency preparedness, regulatory compliance, and the safety of building occupants, visitors, and emergency responders.

Fire and Life Safety Systems

Inspection, testing, and maintenance may involve systems and equipment such as:

  • Fire alarm and detection systems.
  • Emergency lighting and exit signage.
  • Sprinkler and other fire suppression systems.
  • Fire extinguishers and hose cabinets.
  • Fire doors and fire separations.
  • Other building fire and life safety equipment.

Fire safety equipment must remain visible, accessible, and in proper working condition.

Compliance Inspections

Western Fire Safety supports fire and life safety compliance across campus and works with building contacts and campus partners when concerns or deficiencies are identified.

Required checks, tests, and inspections must be completed according to applicable requirements, with follow-up where deficiencies are identified.

Follow-up may include repair, corrective action, further assessment, or coordination with the appropriate campus service.

Report an Equipment or Fire Safety Concern

Contact Western Fire Safety if you notice damaged, missing, blocked, or malfunctioning fire and life safety equipment, or another non-emergency fire safety concern.

Include the building name, specific location, equipment involved if known, and a brief description of the concern.

For fire, smoke, an active alarm, or an immediate threat to life or safety, leave the area and call 911 from a safe location. Do not report an emergency by email.
