Supporting Safe Evacuations

When the Alarm Sounds

Treat every fire alarm as real and begin evacuating immediately.

  1. Leave the building promptly using the closest safe exit.
  2. Do not use elevators during a fire alarm.
  3. Follow posted exit signage and your building's emergency procedures.
  4. Once outside, move away from the building and keep exits and emergency access routes clear.

Supporting an Organized Evacuation

Emergency Team members may encourage occupants to leave, provide general direction toward safe exits, and communicate concerns that could affect evacuation.

Follow your training and the building's approved procedures, including procedures for supporting people who require assistance.

Do not place yourself at risk or delay your own evacuation.

After Leaving the Building

Move away from entrances, exits, sidewalks, roadways, and fire routes so emergency responders can access the building.

Follow your building's assembly arrangements and any direction from emergency personnel or authorized staff. Share relevant information about conditions or people who may still be inside.

Do not re-enter until emergency personnel or authorized staff confirm it is safe.

Report Evacuation Concerns

During an evacuation: Promptly tell emergency responders about blocked escape routes, anyone unable to evacuate safely, or other urgent concerns. Provide the exact location and relevant details as soon as it is safe to do so.

For non-emergency follow-up: Contact Western Fire Safety about missing signage, damaged equipment, access barriers, or issues with evacuation procedures. Include the building name, specific location, and a brief description.

For fire, smoke, an active alarm, or an immediate threat to life or safety, leave the area and call 911 from a safe location. Do not report an emergency by email.
